Stahls E- News

...All over again," to quote Yogi Berra. And not just because of the Indian's non-win on Wednesday (non-win is another word for 'wait 'til next year' – and around here, that's deja vu all over again).

But another “didn't we do this already?” is scheduled for this weekend: Homecoming! Two, actually: both Kent Roosevelt & Kent State have scheduled their Homecomings for the same weekend. You can expect to see some tired band members in Saturday's parade, since the Rough Riders will be performing at their Friday night football game, then turn around & entertain the rest of town along Main St. – with their Homecoming dance in between.

And in light of KSU's Homecoming, Stahl's is featuring a little deja vu of our own; Square Rolls. For years, we've been hearing nostalgic murmurings from Homecome-rs about our Square Rolls, and how delicious they were “back in the day.” Unfortunately, the exact method & recipe has been misplaced, so it seemed a never-to-be-repeated treat. Fortunately, though, Shirley Stahl (the original Mrs. Stahl) & her children have sifted through their memories of Bob's (the original Mr. Stahl) technique & shared what they remembered. If you remember them too, this weekend is your chance to come in & see if we've gotten it right. For those who don't remember them, if you like plenty of walnuts in your sweet roll, these are for you. We're only serving them at the storefront this weekend.

Meanwhile, at the Stow Farmers' Market, we'll be bringing Sticky Rolls, Pizzelles, Frosted Leaf & Pumpkin Cookies, Czech Pastries, Petit Fours, Caramel-filled Brownies, and this week's bread is Finnish Nisu. This ain't your standard sopping-up-the-spaghetti-sauce bread, either. Nisu is more of a breakfast or dessert bread. Why? It's sweet, rich with butter & whole eggs, and fragrant with cardamom, a too-often overlooked spice. And this is your last chance to come out to the Stow Farmers' Market this year, so bring your shopping list! Bittner's Bees, Amber Garden Center, Silver Dollar Farm, and Olive My Heart are just a few of our regular market colleagues. This week is also the church's Harvest Festival, so stop by the front booth for apples and free carvin' pumpkins. The community booth will have literature on healthy lifestyles & food choices (perfect for a farmers' market!) provided by Summa Western-Reserve Hospital, and a registered nurse will be on hand to answer questions and give free blood-pressure checks. Music this week is by Ruth Hulthen and the Black Squirrel Dulcimer Group.

See you Saturday!
