For the last few years, people have been asking for a weekday farmers' market in Kent. It makes sense; there are so many demands on a family's time, especially during the summer, that it's hard to chisel out extra time on the weekend, not to mention the many people who work in Kent during the week, but live out of town. So, voila! The nice folks at The Water St. Church have decided to start one on Monday!
So, here are the details: the market will be on Mondays from 2:00-6:00, which is great for stopping by on your way home from work. If you're not sure where the church is, it's at 1541 S. Water St., across the street from Portage Community Bank and just before Dr. Belli's orthodontic office. Or, you might already know where it is because for the last several years, the congregation has generously opened its land as a community garden, welcoming anyone who wanted to provide themselves with some garden freshness. We're not just being generally informative here - Stahl's Bakery will be attending!
June 25th is the first market day, and we're going to start by bringing Italian Bread, Cinnamon Rolls, Sticky Buns, Czech Pastries, Frosted Baseball & Butterfly Cookies, and Wild Blueberry & Raspberry Swirl Muffins. So, you can pick up bread for dinner (makes great next-day sandwiches, too), some breakfast pastries for Tuesday, and suddenly Monday isn't so bad!
The rest of the week is going to be plenty interesting, too. After last week's heat, this week's temperatures should be a relief. And to end the week on a particularly positive note, Friday, June 29th is the first D.I.C.E.* Sidewalk Cinema of the summer. To celebrate its 35th anniversary, we'll be showing "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope." O.k., 35th anniversary give or take a month. It was originally released on May 25, 1977. But that was in theaters. This is...under the stars! [insert groan here] As all D.I.C.E. events, the movie will be shown at Home Savings Plaza, on the NW corner of Water & Main. The movie starts at dusk, admission is free, and you can chose whether to bring a blanket, chair, or be one with the grass.
