Songs of the Miller?

Kind of sounds like a collection of 16th century folk songs, doesn't it? But in a very literal way, it's going to be this Saturday's musical entertainment. “How can this be?” you might wonder. As you've probably come to expect, the convoluted explanation follows...

You might already know that Stahl's Bakery is a 90-95% 'from scratch' bakery, and we use local flour in all of the cakes, cookies, muffins, piecrusts, cupcakes, and, well, everything we bake except breads (they need flour with higher gluten). But you might wonder how locally we can source cake & pastry flour. The surprising answer is - two blocks away! For over a hundred continuous years, Kent has been home to a mill which turns Ohio grain into Ohio flour, and that's what we use. But this week, Star of the West's manager, Red Michel, will not only be with the Haymaker Market in spirit via the flour they produce, but he and his musical colleagues will be providing the entertainment this Saturday. Rio Neon is the band, and the miller plays mandolin (and other things). This is Rio Neon's first visit to the Haymaker, although Red often rides his bike over, so come & welcome them!
Now for our menu: School has already started for our local kids, and they'll be needing lunches. Stahl's to the rescue! This week's featured bread is Honey Whole Wheat, which we make with 100% whole wheat flour. It's soft, delicious, and a good nutritious start to the school year. But of course, you'll need to pack some cookies, too, and we've got 'em. Already packaged 3/bag, you can grab a week's worth & toss in a bag for every lunch. We'll also be making Italian Bread, Herbed Focaccia, and for a special dessert treat, Caramel-filled Brownies. Since adults need to pack a lunch, too. Don't forget breakfast - we'll be bringing Muffins for Saturday's breakfast, and for the rest of the week, Pancake Mix, which we also make with Kent-milled pastry flour. Our stall is conveniently located next to Goodell's Maple Syrup, so you can plan some very good locally-made breakfasts.
Be sure to get to the market early, since we'll also be participating in the "Discover Downtown" event on Main St. until 4:00. This is a good way for incoming KSU freshmen to find out what the town of Kent has to offer, so we'll be there giving free cookies samples to the newbies. But it does start at noon, so we might be leaving the market a bit early to set up.
Did you know that D.I.C.E.* will be having one more Sidewalk Cinema this Friday? That will be the last one for this season, so come celebrate the end of summer on the lawn of Home Savings Plaza. The featured movie will be animated & family-friendly "The Point." It stars the voices of Ringo Starr, Dustin Hoffman, and Paul Frees. And for a special pre-movie treat, The Bluestones will play, starting at 7:00! And BIG thanks to Little Ceasar's for once again treating us all to free pizza! So that's dinner, live entertainment, and a movie for free! Does it get any better than that?
See you Saturday!
