Did you know that the phrase “Super Bowl” is copyrighted by the NFL? The legal usage rules are a bit involved for we laymen, but basically it can be used in news, but not in advertising... unless you've bought a license from the NFL. Sounds expensive, and we're just a small hometown bakery, so we'll just say “The Big Game.” OK? Wink, wink.

Anyway, The Big Game is this Sunday. According to "Pizza Today" magazine, this is one of the biggest days for pizza shops, and some food industry sources show The Big Game day as one of the biggest gathering &“food” holidays in the U.S., second only to Thanksgiving. Sure, there will be pizza, and beer, and chips and dips and pretzels and nachos. The show starts at 6, but there are pregames. And pregames. And pregames. So you might also want to stock up on more solid fare for the long haul, like luncheon meats and cheeses. And unless you & your nearest and dearest tend to spear a pile of them on a fork and call it a “meatsickle,” you'll need some bread. We have a suggestion in keeping with The Big Game's hearty theme. Stahl's Dark Lager Sourdough. This is good stuff! It takes two days to make, developing flavor and encouraging the wild yeast. Don't worry about the beer in the bread conflicting with the beer in your bloodstream: the alcohol is baked out. Even if you're not a football fan, this is worth a trip to Stahl's on Saturday! Come to think of it, the pregames start in the morning, so you might want to gather up some breakfast items for Sunday while you're here.

Of course you don't have to wait for The Big Game to get something hearty and satisfying in your belly. This week's soup is Beef Vegetable, served with a roll for $4.25. Then starting Thursday, we'll be bringing back Raspberry Truffles and Caramel-Filled Brownies. Remember those brownies?

See you soon!
